'Small Wonders'

This exhibition is a series of embroideries of the often-overlooked marvels of the natural world. Insects are the foundational keystones of our ecosystems. Essential to life and fascinating in form. These works depict some South Australian native insects that have small ranges and are vulnerable to habitat loss or have become extinct in some parts of the state as their range has decreased.

These works are made using a range of traditional embroidery techniques and hand cut sequins to describe the form and texture of the insects. The artist collects domestic plastics no longer in use and meticulously cuts them into sequin shape with leather punches. Repurposed plastics and salvaged materials are fundamental to the artist’s practice. She employs a ‘make do and mend’ approach as she explores ideas relating to nature conversation and cultural consumption.
